OKAY NOTE: There are references to a movie called Dead Poets Society.
And a reference to a poem called O Me! O Life! by Walt Whitman
So unless you've read the poem n seen the movie, you won't get the full scope of my poem.
So.. HERE WE GO
Contributing My Verse
I’m never an actor on stage.
Not even a prop.
As a powerful play goes on,
I stay as an audience forever.
From day to day, as I mind my own work,
I try to find ways to cope
With bothersome classmates, and
Although I am often at times pestered
By their vexatious actions, I envy
Their ability to do what I never do—
To vocalize their feelings.
To stand up for their opinions.
And to diverge from the norm.
Along with being in the background
I carry along with me the pressure
Of having to live up to standards that are not my own;
To live up to others' expectations.
Like the students in this story,
I will probably have to read my poem.
As the teacher calls me up,
I will struggle.
I will try not to choke.
My Captain will encourage me to speak up.
However, I am just a shadow.
I am never an actor onstage—not even a prop,
I wish to contribute a verse, but it is a struggle,
And as a powerful play abides,
I dwell with the audience.
Like Todd Anderson,
I remain as just another onlooker.
But one day my words will be endowed,
And I will have finally contributed my verse.
